Placing requests is almost impossible at Douglas Academy if the pupil doesn’t live in the catchment zone. Only through the music school will a student be granted a place if living outside the zone. Parents must provide proof of address to show the pupil lives in the Douglas Academy catchment zone.
A Council Tax letter from the current year, a utility/ broadband bill from the past 3 months, and a legal document showing the child is registered, or you are the guardian full-time, and they live at the address, must be shown to East Dunbartonshire Council when applying to the school.

Milngavie & Bearsden Catchment Area Split
Douglas Academy’s boundary line goes through Bearsden and Milngavie. The way the two towns are connected, it can be hard to differentiate which area the school’s boundary covers.
South Boundary Line
Homes south of the Asda in Milngavie and along the A81 lead into the Bearsden Academy zone. Either Mosshead or Bearsden Primary catchment zone will be transitioned to the further along Milngavie Road you go.
East Boundary Line
Past Baldernock and towards Torrance village will cross into the Boclair Academy’s catchment zone, as this is the area for Torrance Primary – a feeder primary school for Boclair.
Music School of Douglas Academy
The Music School of Douglas Academy was founded in 1979 and has produced world-renowned magicians over the years. Pupils who are talented in music receive first-class specialist education in instrumental and vocal tuition.
Douglas Academy is only one of four specialised Centres of Excellence that receive funding from the Scottish Government and cost zero in tuition. Approximately 50 students are enrolled in the music school. Pupils improve their musical abilities alongside the standard curriculum.
Dedicated blocks in the timetables are reserved for one-on-one lessons in music, including instruments and supervised practice. Students will still study all the main subjects, including maths, English, and the sciences.
Pupils will receive training in aural training and music history, harmony, composition, orchestral playing, chamber music ensembles, choral singing, principal and secondary instrumental/ vocal specialisms. All of which is studied alongside SQA Higher and Advanced Higher Music.
Instructors at Douglas Academy Music School are not teachers but tutors from the likes of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Scottish Opera.
How to Get a Place at Douglas Academy Music School
Pupils don’t need to live in the Douglas Academy catchment zone to get a place at the music school. With national funding, students across the country can apply.
Auditions will be held to gain a place at the school each year with applications closing at the end of January. The independent panel conducting the interview process will assess the pupil’s musical potential and how they will suit the school’s intense dual curriculum.
Boarding for Pupils
Pupils who don’t live in the Milngavie area or nearby can get a place at the residential hostel at Knightswood Secondary School in Glasgow. The accommodation is shared with pupils from the Dance School of Scotland, and the hostel is supervised by staff at all times.
Daily shuttles run the pupils directly from the hostel to Douglas Academy. Parents don’t need to pay anything for the accommodation as the Scottish Government’s funding fully covers it.

Douglas Academy School Uniform
Douglas Academy school uniform follows the East Dunbartonshire Council guidelines.
Standard Uniform Policy (S1 to S5)
- School Blazer: Plain black blazer made from wool with the Douglas Academy crest embroidered.
- Shirt: Standard white school shirt or blouse that should be buttoned all the way up the collar.
- School Tie: Striped black and gold Douglas Academy tie securely around the neck.
- Trousers/Skirts: Black trousers/ skirt without any emblems, labels, etc. Douglas Academy staff are strict with the uniform policy and won’t allow denim, shorts, or tracksuit bottoms to be worn in school.
- Knitwear: Cardigans and plain V-neck pullovers are allowed over the white school shirt. Hoodies, etc., are not allowed in classrooms.
- Footwear: Trainers/ sports shoes are forbidden in class and only allowed in PE. Dark plain shoes are expected to be worn with the Douglas Academy uniform.
Senior Douglas Academy Uniform

PE Kit at Douglas Academy
Students should have a complete change of clothes for PE and not wear the same clothes worn throughout the day for hygiene standards.
White or black t-shirt with a plain design, with no football strips/ tops allowed. Shorts, tracksuit bottoms, and leggings are also fine, but should follow the same guidelines as the tops – no football colours. Non-marking-soled trainers should be worn during PE and kept clean.
